appreciate and benefit from its innovative and functional design. Sun Bum, a premium sun care company based in Cocoa Beach, FL, only makes products that meet the stringent standards of The Skin Cancer Foundation. Products have SPF of 15+ or higher to protect people “who work and play in the sun” from the damaging rays, says Sun Bum’s CEO Tom Rinks.

Functional Styling

The company’s just-released PRO line was created to fit perfectly and comfortably in your hand and in your pocket, too. “Sun Bum designed its PRO line packaging with surfers, skiers, snowboarders and other athletes in mind,” explains Rinks. “The product packaging was made with a sticky texture so it doesn’t slip out of your hands in water or from sweat and has no corners or edges to poke and prod you when carrying it around. Additionally, the sleek design makes it easy to grip and store in your pockets or board shorts.”

The oval-shaped, sunny yellow bottles are topped with an inset closure. He notes the patented closure is engineered to ensure it won’t open during activity. It’s stylish, too. The finish on the closure looks like wood grain and it is stamped with the Sun Bum logo of Sonny the Ape. The sunscreen bottles also have an expandable label affixed to the back panel. The label provides FDA Drug Facts and directions for use. The final page of the labeling features the Sun Bum logo and tag line: Trust the Bum. All Sun Bum sun care products are made, tested and filled in Florida. (However, the packaging is made in China.)

Award-Winning Design

Other nominees include industry players Skullcandy, Electric Visual, Nixon and Volcom. Products were nominated that featured the most exciting innovation, design or appeal. Winners will be announced at the SIMA Image Awards ceremony on February 9, at The Grove in Anaheim, CA.

“We’re surprised and humbled that our new little sunscreen company is being recognized next to companies we’ve admired for so long,” says Rinks. “It means a lot to us.”
